The virtual meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden was frank, in-depth, constructive and fruitful, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng said after the meeting concluded on Tuesday.

It pointed out the direction and injected new impetus for the future development of China-U.S. relations, Xie said.

Xi and Biden discussed areas including Taiwan, trade and climate change at a time when the two countries have gone through a turbulent year of up and down in bilateral ties.

At a press conference held after the meeting, China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said if China and the U.S. can't go back to where they were, they should focus on their future relations.

"China is under no illusions, but has the confidence to maintain its composure. It will remain open to all options that would benefit the bilateral relations," he said.
