Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke highly of China-Russia relations and stressed that he will deepen cooperation with its southern neighbor.

He made the remarks at an expanded meeting of the Russian Foreign Ministry Board on Thursday.

Russia will work with China to fight against some countries' attempts at sowing discord between the two nations, he said.

"Together with our Chinese friends, we will continue to respond to such attempts by expanding our political, economic and other cooperation, and coordinating steps in the international arena," he said.

On the same day, he also signed a decree awarding the Order of Friendship to China Media Group (CMG) President Shen Haixiong.

CMG has been devoted to promoting exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and Russian media, noted a Russian Gazette report published on Sunday.

Putin was interviewed by Shen a month after the Russian president began his new term in 2018.

"We deeply appreciate our cooperation with Russia's traditional, reliable partners, allies and friends. No doubt, China is one among them," Putin said in the interview on June 6, 2018.

When the China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation had its 20th anniversary in July, Shen and Dmitry Kiselyov, director general of the Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency, co-published an initiative calling for objective, just and comprehensive reporting in a volatile and complex global environment.

The treaty, which would have expired in February 2022, has been extended for another five years.
