Safety is always a major concern for students abroad. According to American media, Zheng Shaoxiong was just one of 40 students killed or injured in 24 school shootings in the U.S. this year. Another victim, Fan Yiran, was also a student at the University of Chicago. He was studying for a PhD. In 2017, visiting Chinese scholar Zhang Yingying was kidnapped and killed by a university fellow in Illinois. There has been an outpouring of sympathy on Chinese social media in reaction to Zheng's death. One post said these students studying overseas bring their families hope, and such an outstanding person shouldn't have to die like Zheng did. The president of the University has called on authorities to treat the increase in violence in Chicago with the same intensity as a public health crisis. CGTN's Global Watch spoke to Shi Haotong, vice president of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association at the University of Chicago, and asked what she thought of on-campus security.
