The Wukesong Sports Center is one of six stadiums hosting Winter Olympic events in Beijing. Our reporter Cen Ziyuan went to see how preparations are going.
CEN ZIYUAN Beijing "This is the feel of being at the Wukesong Sports Center. The arena will host women's and some men's ice hockey events during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics."
The capacity here for basketball is 18-thousand seats, but it's cut to just 11-thousand for ice-hockey for safety reasons. The arena has already passed two test events for the Winter Games with flying colours, both on the ice, and off it. Coronavirus prevention and control is one of the organizer's main concerns.
CEN ZIYUAN Beijing "This barrier beside me is called an epidemic protection and isolation board. It's used to separate staff and individuals under closed-loop management. They're about three meters high and officials say they follow ventilation guidelines to block the spread of Covid-19."
The closed-loop management system means separating athletes and staff from visitors and media. They have designated zones and travel paths, so as to limit contact and the potential spread of the virus. This is when the delivery robot comes in handy.
There are locker rooms at the other end of the tunnel. In the upgrade for the Olympics, two more were added to make six. They have all the usual facilities, such as storage areas, showers, bathrooms and food-prep areas.
There are also very impressive laundry services here, including massive washing machines and driers to accommodate multiple teams.
These was a basketball arena at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. It only takes six hours to turn it into an ice-hockey arena.
CEN ZIYUAN Beijing "The ice rink is 60 meters long and 26 meter wide. After undergoing test events, the ice is cracked. But more will be made before the real games begin."
Training facilities are connected to the sports center via an underground tunnel giving athletes easy access to both areas for their preparations and training. Every tiny technical detail was accounted for during the test events, including signage around the center. Everything will be ready again when the Games finally begin in February.
