What can a country's belligerence do to its soldiers?

The Associated Press recently reported that as many as 160,000 active-duty U.S. troops are struggling to "feed their families." Food insecurity is not the only predicament faced by American soldiers. Physical and psychological damages have left them with disabilities, a higher suicide rate, and hardships in adjusting to civilian life. The fruits of American belligerence may include politicians' achievements or commanders’ medals, but the detrimental downstream consequences are borne by ordinary soldiers for the rest of their lives.
