At least 11 people were confirmed dead in a coal mine accident in the Kemerovo region of Russia's Siberia, the TASS news agency reported.

Smoke spread across the mine at around 8:35 a.m. local time (0135 GMT) on Thursday at a depth of 250 meters below ground.

There were 285 people inside the coal mine when the accident happened, and 239 people were evacuated to the surface, the Emergencies Ministry said, adding that the whereabouts of the remaining miners have been established, but  heavy smoke has affected the rescue operation.

The accident has also left 45 people injured, including four in serious condition, the ministry said.

According to Tass, citing sources, the ignition of coal dust caused the accident as smoke spread through the ventilation throughout the mine.
