Beijing's ancient royal parks shine in early winter
CGTN

The Summer Palace in northwestern Beijing has put on another spectacular look as winter sets in across northern China. Every year around the winter solstice, the famous spectacle of twilight shining through Seventeen Arch Bridge attracts hundreds of people, who gather and wait in the early morning just to witness and record the flashy moment. This year is no exception.

The bridge designers used their knowledge of astronomy and geography when building the bridge so that when the sun shines at the lowest point in the afternoon around the winter solstice, the light will run through the holes exactly, presenting an amazing view that combines natural beauty with human art.
