Austria has detected its first suspected case of the new Omicron coronavirus variant, authorities in Tirol province said late on Saturday.

A traveler who returned to Tirol from South Africa last week tested positive for COVID-19 with indications of the new variant, although further sequencing over the coming days will be needed for confirmation, Tirol authorities said in a statement.
