The Japanese government on Thursday withdrew its request for airlines to completely stop taking reservations for inbound international flights until the end of this month, ostensibly to prevent local spread of the Omicron variant, local media reported Thursday.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida admitted that the transportation ministry's announcement the previous day had caused confusion among the public, and instructed officials to "adequately consider" people's wishes to return home.
