Are female-only subway carriages necessary?

Although many have gotten used to the close physical proximity on subways, overcrowded carriages are all too often not a safe space for passengers. Many countries have set up female-only carriages on the subway to protect women.

However, can female-only carriages help provide a safer daily commute for women? We asked passengers from China, India, Japan and Brazil for opinions. Many said the ultimate solution to reducing sexual harassment against women on public transport is to educate people, including children, to respect women and offer help when needed.
