At least 38 people have been confirmed dead and 69 others injured in a fire at the main prison in Burundi's capital Gitega. The blaze broke out before dawn on Tuesday. The interior ministry tweeted that the disaster was caused by an electrical short-circuit at the nearly century-old prison. Several sources said the inmates were trapped because the wardens did not have the keys to certain parts of the prison overnight. A police officer also said emergency services were late to the scene. The fire was later brought under control, but many parts of the prison were destroyed. It was the second fire at the prison this year, after another incident in August, which was also blamed on an electrical problem.
