Moments of two finless porpoises hopping out of water in the Yangtze River were filmed by a photographer in Yichang City, central China's Hubei Province. What used to be a rare sight is now becoming more common after a strict annual fishing ban took effect on the river on January 1, 2020.
The finless porpoise is under first-class protection in China. Its population dwindled dramatically due to food deficiency caused by overfishing in the Yangtze River. Now that all fishing activity is completely banned, many places have reported repeated sightings of the species.
