South African researchers claimed that the Omicron variant makes Pfizer and BioNTech vaccines significantly less effective. A small preliminary study shows a 41-fold drop in the shot's ability to fight against the new strain, compared with the original strain of SARS-CoV-2. The preliminary findings echo the drugmakers' initial lab results.
