China announced retaliatory measures after the U.S. sanctioned four Chinese officials over alleged human rights violations in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said on Tuesday that Beijing will impose sanctions on four officials serving on the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom. Zhao also slammed U.S. sanctions on five Chinese officials in Hong Kong as serious violations of international law and basic norms of international relations.
