A cold wave with temperatures dropping to below minus 40 degrees Celsius has hit China's northernmost city of Mohe in the northeastern Heilongjiang Province.

An aerial view showed the whole city center shrouded in a fog of white ice.

Genhe City of Hulunbuir in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region posted the lowest temperature of minus 45.2 degrees Celsius.

Streets were mostly empty of pedestrians and vehicles. People who had spent time outdoors were covered with white frost on their face masks and eyebrows.

The year's sixth cold wave in China is expected between December 23 and 27, and 26 provincial-level cities will see the coldest days so far of the winter.
