"Climbing a mountain of knives and plunging into a sea of fire" is a popular Chinese phrase to describe someone's boldness to persevere through hardship. 

There's a place in Yunnan Province where they take it a bit more literally. Here's a look at the annual Kuoshi Festival in Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture.
