Between the years 460 and 465, a monk named Tanyao, along with 10,000 craftsmen, carved the first five caves into a 1-kilometer ridge. And the Yungang Grottoes were born! The Buddha statues in the first five caves were equated with the first five emperors of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534).
