A total of 226 flights have been canceled and two runways suspended due to heavy snowfall at New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido, Japan, NHK reported on Saturday.

Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways have canceled 212 domestic flights due to strong winds and massive snow, affecting 16,000 passengers during New Year holiday, local media reported.

At least 165 trains, including the rapid airport connecting New Chitose Airport and Sapporo, were suspended as of 6 p.m. on Saturday, said the Japanese Railway Hokkaido.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the cold snap is expected to gradually ease over Saturday night, but heavy snowfall is forecasted to continue in some areas across northern to eastern Japan through Sunday.
