03:59

A state of emergency has been declared in parts of Kazakhstan following widespread protests against fuel price hikes. Demonstrations erupted on Sunday after the announcement. Police were seen using tear gas and stun grenades to disperse crowds. Reports say at least 100 members of Kazakh security forces were injured in clashes. Some 200 people have been detained. The government has resigned amid the crisis. Some leaders say the uproar has shaken the stable image of the former Soviet Republic. The oil-rich country in Central Asia has attracted billions of dollars worth of investment in fuel and metal industries. The authorities are calling for calm.
