European Parliament President David Sassoli has been hospitalized in Italy due to abnormal functioning of his immune system since December 26, his spokesman Roberto Cuillo said Monday.

"This hospitalization was necessary because of a serious complication due to a dysfunction of the immune system," the spokesman said, adding all activities of the 65-year-old have been canceled. 

Sassoli was elected as EU Parliament President in July 2019.
