Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced on Tuesday that Japan will extend its entry ban on non-resident foreigners to the end of February in order to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant.

Japan had adopted border controls when the Omicron variant emerged late last year by banning all new entries by non-Japanese, including students and foreign family members of Japanese or permanent residents, unless there were exceptional circumstances.
