Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega was sworn in on Monday in a ceremony held in Managua, officially starting a new five-year term.

In his inauguration speech, Ortega thanked the Nicaraguan people for their trust, and said he was committed to human rights and multilateralism.

He also thanked China and other countries for their help in his country's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ortega, candidate for the ruling Sandinista National Liberation Front, won reelection after his party secured 75.92 percent of the votes in the general elections held on November 7, 2021.

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro and Cuba's President Miguel Diaz-Canel attended the inauguration.

Chinese President Xi Jinping's special envoy Cao Jianming also attended the ceremony.

In a meeting with Ortega on Monday, Cao said China stands ready to work with the Central American country to promote bilateral political trust and boost cooperation. Ortega also reiterated Nicaragua's commitment to the one-China principle.

China and Nicaragua resumed diplomatic relations after the latter cut "diplomatic relations" with the Taiwan region in December last year.
