In Europe, seven million new Omicron variant cases were reported in the first week of January, more than doubling in just two weeks. World Health Organization Regional Director for Europe Doctor Hans Kluge warned of the consequences if infections continue at current rates. Kluge also said he was greatly concerned that as Omicron moves eastward across the European continent, the variant will take a much higher toll on countries with lower vaccination rates.
