Japan widens COVID-19 controls as Omicron drives record infections

Japan on Wednesday widened COVID-19 controls to cover half of its population as the Omicron variant drives new infections to record levels.

The government agreed to the plan after experts backed placing 13 regions, including Tokyo, "under quasi-emergency measures from January 21 to February 13."
