A massive underwater volcano erupted continuously in Tonga on January 14 and 15, triggering a deadly tsunami, covering islands in ash and knocking out local communications. Tsunamis also affected other countries around the Pacific Ocean, including Japan, the U.S. and Peru.

Tonga's premier telecom service provider Digicel on January 27 said it has restored internet connectivity via a satellite link for all its customers.

A new batch of emergency supplies delivered by China on January 28 arrived in Nuku'alofa, the capital city of Tonga. These supplies include drinking water, food, personal protective equipment, tents, folding beds, water purifiers and walkie talkies.
