Peru demands compensation from Spanish company for oil spill
00:38

Thousands of barrels of oil have leaked into Peru's beaches after the tsunami in Tonga. The Peruvian government is demanding compensation from Spanish oil giant Repsol. It says the spill is an "ecological disaster." Three beaches were sealed off after 6,000 barrels of oil leaked from Repsol, which is located off the coast near Lima. According to Repsol officials, they are working with authorities to clean up the beaches, which are now littered with carcasses of dead birds, fish and other species. Peruvian prosecutors are investigating the company for environmental contamination.
