A vast reef of pristine rose-shaped corals, apparently unharmed by climate change, has been found in deep water off the coast of Tahiti in South Pacific Ocean, UNESCO announced on January 20, 2022.

Measuring 3 kilometers long and up to 65 meters wide, UNESCO said it was "one of the most extensive healthy coral reefs on record." 

The UN added it was "highly unusual" to find healthy coral in cooler waters, and that this could suggest there are more reefs in deeper oceans which are less vulnerable to warming waters.
