The current priority for the Tongan government is to ensure water and food supplies for its people and relevant supplies are being distributed, Tonga's Parliament Speaker Lord Fakafanua told China Media Group on Saturday.

He said about 2,000 people were without access to drinking water in the western part of the main island of Tonga due to volcanic ash contamination.

And a national emergency team had distributed 60,000 liters of water to residents.

Fakafanua said agriculture had also suffered from the sinking ashes, but an extensive survey hadn't been conducted regarding exact losses to the sector as clean-up continues.

Meanwhile, Tongans are trying to get back on their feet as people have been queuing for limited money services that were restored on Saturday, a week after the devastating volcanic eruption and tsunami.
