In northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the first school ice hockey team was established in a small county called Fuyun about eight years ago. Since then, more and more young students in this remote part of China started to participate in the sport. The team now has about 60 members aged from six to 16, most of whom are of Kazakh ethnic minority, with a female coach named Zhou Xiaofeng.
The school ice hockey team still doesn't have an official name, and the only competition it has ever participated in was a local one held by Altay Prefecture in 2020. But this hasn't dampened the students' enthusiasm for the sport. As the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics approaches, many members feel motivated and dream of becoming professionals in the future.
