Wetlands include marshes, beaches and lakes, which in many cases are the natural habitats of waterfowl, particularly birds which move across borders. In order to forge a beautiful environment and comfortable habitats for birds, China has made great progress in wetland protection over the past decades.

China has 64 wetlands of international importance, with more than 1,600 wetland parks hosting over 2,300 species of plants and nearly 330 kinds of birds, according to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.

China's first Wetland Protection Law will be implemented on June 1, 2022. According to the law, China will exercise the administration of wetlands at different levels, and important wetland areas will be subject to ecological conservation red lines.

A national catalog of important wetlands will be released by forestry and grassland authorities and other related departments of the State Council for the better management of wetlands. Stipulations on the protection of peat swamps and mangrove wetlands are highlighted in the newly adopted law.
