China Diplomacy: Chinese FM holds talks with visiting dignitaries attending Beijing Winter Olympics

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has met with officials from Thailand, Singapore and Turkmenistan. Friday's exchanges touched on vaccines, the South China Sea and Afghanistan. Zhou Jiaxin has more. 

After almost 50 times visiting China, Thai Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is again in Beijing, this time for the Winter Games. In her meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the awardee of China's Medal of Friendship thanked Beijing for supplying vaccines in the early stages of the pandemic. Princess Sirindhorn spoke highly of Thailand and China's cooperation in different areas.

The Princess shared with Minister Wang her idea to publish a new book featuring the history and achievements of the Communist Party of China. To tell those stories, she will continue her trips across China.

Following the China-Thai meeting, Wang had talks with his Singaporean counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan who accompanied President Halimah Yacob for the opening ceremonies. This is Balakrishnan's second time as an official attending the Beijing Olympics. He hailed Singapore and China's deeper cooperation on infrastructure projects, pacts on regional trade and digital economy.

The two sides also exchanged views on the South China Sea. Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed Beijing's urge to work with ASEAN countries to reach an early agreement on the proposed Code of Conduct over issues concerning the sea.

Wang met with Turkmenistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov. He welcomed the visiting delegation led by the country's President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow who is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Meredov said Turkmenistan is willing to raise the level of its bilateral ties with China, particularly in energy and infrastructure cooperation. Wang acknowledged the efforts their two countries have made to help improve the situation in Afghanistan through the Foreign Minister's meeting of Afghanistan's neighboring countries.
