At least 14 people were killed and 35 others injured in a landslide in the town of Dosquebradas in the western Colombian department of Risaralda, local authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

"Our updated report indicates that 35 people were injured, 14 lost their lives and one remains missing," the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) said, adding rescue efforts were ongoing.

The landslides, which occurred early Tuesday morning, were caused by heavy rains in the last few days, and have destroyed houses along its path.

Landslides are common in Colombia due to the mountainous terrain, frequent heavy rains and poor or informal construction of houses.

Colombian President Ivan Duque offered condolences to the families of the deceased, adding emergency teams from the department are responding to the situation.
