Suzanne Schulting of the Netherlands defended her title in the short track speed skating women's 1,000m final in 1:28.391 at the Beijing Winter Olympics on Friday.

Schulting established a new world record of 1:26.514 in the quarterfinal shortly before.

"I became really confident out there after skating a world record. I was really excited," Schulting said.

"For the Netherlands, it means a lot. I worked so hard for the whole team. I got the gold, but I got the gold for the whole team, and I am super proud," she added.

So far, Dutch athletes have pocketed five gold medals in Beijing, the first four from speed skating.

Earlier on Monday in the short track speed skating women's 500m final, Schulting won the silver medal while Italy's legendary Arianna Fontana took gold.

Five-time Olympian Fontana, however, was penalized for causing contact in Friday's women's 1,000m finals, and thus missed the podium.
