At least one person was killed and 42 others were injured after a bus exploded in Shenyang City, northeast China's Liaoning Province, on Saturday afternoon, local police said. 

Among the wounded, two sustained critical injuries. 

Shenyang police said they responded to the incident at around 5:55 p.m., which happened at the junction of Huanghe Street and Ningshan Road in Shenyang's Huanggu District. 

An investigation into the cause of the incident is underway.

Witnesses said they heard a loud bang due to the explosion, but the bus involved did not catch fire.
