Japan on Monday urged its citizens to leave Ukraine as soon as possible after announcing the withdrawal of its diplomats from the country amid mounting tensions between Moscow and Kyiv.

"We must immediately evacuate in the safest way possible," Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters in Hawaiian city of Honolulu.

Japan's Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday night that it was withdrawing diplomats from Ukraine and leaving only a small number of embassy staff there.
