UN team reviews Japan's plan to dump treated nuclear wastewater into sea
00:41

The UN's nuclear watchdog has started a review of treated wastewater at the Fukushima nuclear plant. The Japanese government plans to gradually release the contaminated water in 2023, drawing strong protests from its neighbors. Experts from 15 countries will visit the Fukushima plant and meet government and utility officials. They'll review details of the water, the safety of the discharge, sampling methods and the environmental impact.
In March 2011, a massive earthquake and tsunami swamped the Fukushima reactor, triggering the meltdown of three reactors and the release of large amounts of radiation.
