Landslides and floodwaters caused by heavy rainfall hit Petropolis, a city in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. Houses in hillside neighborhoods were destroyed and cars swept away as floodwaters washed through the city's streets. Rescue teams are removing the mud and searching for survivors. Petropolis is a popular tourist destination in the hills above Rio de Janeiro which used to be the summer getaway for Brazil's monarchs in the 19th century.
