The Beijing Winter Olympics have utilized some of China's newest achievements in science and technology, featuring technologies such as an underwater torch relay, modern sports and temperature control equipment, new energy vehicles, and virtual reality games.
The Science and Technology Winter Olympics Leading Group was formed under the leadership of the Beijing 2022 Organizing Committee and the Ministry of Science and Technology, Zhu Xuehua, director of the Department of Social Development, Ministry of Science and Technology, told a news conference of the Beijing Media Center of the Winter Olympics on Wednesday.
The group coordinated scientific and technological support in organizing "safe and splendid" Winter Olympics and Paralympics, he said.
Chinese athletes have recorded historic achievements during the Olympics that Li Zhiquan, deputy director of the Department of Science and Education, General Administration of Sports of China, credited in part to the role of science and technology.
"The role of technology in competitive sports is becoming more prominent. General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized that China's ice and snow sports must use scientific and technological innovation," Li said.
"The General Administration of Sports of China resolutely implements these instructions, and with the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology, we insist on helping athletes strengthen their bodies through scientific training."
Officials say the Games can show China's technological and innovative capabilities and help boost high-tech industrialization.
They say China will use the Winter Olympics platform to accelerate its technological transformation and industrial development.
Beijing has been holding up its end as the world's first dual Olympic city through a showcase of high technology.
