Guangzhou has opened an emergency water route for fresh food headed to Hong Kong. This comes as a coronavirus outbreak among border-passing truck drivers disrupted road transportation. Authorities say Lianhuashan Port to the southeast of Guangzhou is part of a well-established transportation network with direct access to Hong Kong. The first batch of fresh Choy Sum, or Chinese Flowering Cabbage, arrived in Hong Kong early on Saturday, February 19, 2022.

Some industry leaders in Hong Kong have said shipping by sea will ease the shortage of fresh food supplies in Hong Kong, and the method could potentially bring in 70 percent of the original volume for vegetables.
