The only new facility for ice events at Beijing 2022 is the National Speed Skating Oval, nicknamed the "Ice Ribbon."

It is the world's first Winter Olympics speed skating venue to use a carbon dioxide transcritical direct cooling refrigeration system. This environmentally-friendly technology can control the temperature difference of the ice surface and keep it within 0.5 degrees Celsius. 

The astonishing consistency of its hardness and texture also contributes to better athletes' performance on ice, and that was in evidence at these Games with a number of Olympic and world records broken at the venue.
