Zhao Hai, a research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said peace and security serve the interest of both countries. But the difference lies in the different approaches the two countries took to reach security. He said America believes an alliance system ensures security, whereas China believes that a broad, inclusive process and China-U.S. peaceful co-existence and mutual respect could lay the foundation for regional prosperity.
Zhao also gave his take on recently approved $100 million U.S. arms sales to Taiwan. He said arms sales to Taiwan are based on domestic law in the U.S., which is inconsistent with many joint communique. He said U.S. arms sales to Taiwan further challenges China's red line.
