In February 1972, Nixon became the first sitting U.S. president to travel to the People's Republic of China. The visit came at the height of the Cold War, and when the two countries didn't have diplomatic relations. It would play a major role in transforming their relationship over the coming years. 

50 years on, they're the world's two biggest economies.
