China maintains that the Cold War mentality should be completely abandoned and a balanced, effective and sustainable European security mechanism should be finally established through dialogue and negotiation, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on Friday.

Wang made the remarks in response to questions related to the Ukraine crisis at a regular press briefing of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

We urge parties to respect each other's legitimate security concerns and oppose actions that hype up war, he added.

In response to U.S. Press Secretary Jen Psaki's Ukraine-related remarks asking China to pick a side of history, Wang said that China always decides on the basis of the merits of the issues, and always stands on the side of peace and justice.

"There is a complex historical background and context on Ukraine issues. The current situation is the result of the interplay of various factors," he added. "The door to peace has not closed yet."

China has been making efforts in promoting a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine issues. President Xi Jinping has called on all sides to adhere to the direction of a political resolution during his phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron. When talking with his counterpart over the phone, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi also stressed the importance of a political solution and urged parties to respect each other's legitimate security concerns, Wang said.

When asked about sanctions on Russia, the spokesperson stressed that sanctioning is not a solution to solve the problem and China has urged all countries to work for de-escalation through dialogue, consultation and negotiation, and prevent further escalation.

He also said that China opposes any kind of illegal unilateral sanctions and urges all relevant parties not to undermine the legitimate rights and interests of China when dealing with the Ukraine issues and relations with Russia.

China and Russia conduct normal trade cooperation based on mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, the spokesperson continued.
