The European Commission will ask European Union (EU) member states next week to grant temporary asylum to all Ukrainians coming to the 27-nation bloc for up to three years without the need to first apply, according to media reports on Sunday.
Ukrainians can stay visa-free in the EU for up to 90 days and can move freely between member countries.
The UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, said on Sunday that 368,000 people had fled Ukraine after Russia launched a military operation there last week, with 45,200 arriving in Poland in just 15 hours.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday said she discussed the refugee issue with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a phone call as the EU affirmed it is ready and "well prepared" to take in people fleeing Ukraine.
