Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday said his country is fighting to be equal members of Europe and urged the European Union (EU) to grant it membership.
In a videolink address to the European Parliament, Zelenskyy said the EU must prove it is with Ukraine.
"The European Union is going to be much stronger with us, that's for sure. Without you, Ukraine is going to be lonesome," Zelenskyy said. "Do prove that you are with us. Do prove that you will not let us go. Do prove that you are indeed Europeans and then life will win over death and light will win over darkness. Glory be to Ukraine."
Zelenskyy officially signed an application for Ukraine's EU membership on Monday. According to Ukrainian media, the application, which is under the accelerated procedure, is registered and being considered by the EU.
Charles Michel, president of the European Council, said on Tuesday that EU institutions and governments will have to seriously look at Ukraine's request.
