The death toll from a suicide attack Friday on a mosque in the northwest Pakistan city of Peshawar has climbed to 56 with 194 wounded, with multiple in critical condition, a local hospital official said.

The official account of Peshawar police tweeted that two assailants were involved in the attack on the Shia Jamia Mosque, and they exchanged fire with the police deployed at the entrance door, according to Aaj news.

"One policeman was martyred and another was injured in the firing. His condition is critical," it added.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday sought a report from officials on the Peshawar mosque blast as Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid confirmed that the incident was a suicide attack, Aaj news reported.
