The Chinese mainland has reported more than 1,300 new local cases of COVID-19. The northeastern province of Jilin is the worst hit with 895 infections, followed by Shandong with 92 cases and Guangdong with 79. The rest were detected in 14 other provinces and cities. The spread of the Omicron variant has prompted Jilin's provincial capital of Changchun to lock down.
