The Ukrainian authorities announced on Wednesday that the mayor of the southern Ukrainian city of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov, has been released days after Kyiv claimed that he had been abducted by Russian forces, AFP has reported.

Fedorov was swapped for nine captured Russian soldiers, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian presidency was quoted as saying.

There has been no comment from the Russian side.
