Inflation in Germany surged in March to a record high not seen since the country reunified in 1990, official figures published Wednesday showed, as the situation in Ukraine sent energy prices soaring.

Consumer prices rose by 7.3 percent annually, according to the federal statistics agency Destatis, up from 5.1 percent in February. Prices last climbed at the same pace in West Germany in November 1981.
