Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday signed a decree requiring "unfriendly" countries to open accounts in Russian banks and pay for Russian gas in rubles. The order will come into force on April 1.

If unfriendly countries do not pay in rubles from April 1, Russia will consider this a default on gas contracts, in which case the existing contracts will be stopped, according to the decree.
